Nakanosawa kokeshi by Honda Nobuo

This Nakanosawa kokeshi is 23 cm (9")

This style of kokeshi could well be considered a style in its own right and not a branch of the Tsuchiyu style; it would become the 12th style of traditional kokeshi!

It the 20s a dancer called Iwamoto Zenkichi (and also a craftsman) created this particular style. He relies for this on a paper mache puppet that he used during his artistic performances.

People began to take an interest in this strange style, and nicknamed it Taka Bozo (Shaved Monkhead Octopus).

His son, Iwamoto Yoshizo, continued to produce this kokeshi style after his father's death in 1994.

These kokeshi have a big flat head, with concentric black circles (like Tsuchiyu kokeshi). They have very big eyes, and their noses are very wide.

Their body are thin with a narrowing at the shoulders. The head is usually nested in the body. The patterns that can be found on their bodies are peonies and cherry blossoms.

We can say that this curious style is relatively comical when we see it for the first time. When we look at these kokeshi, they looks like caricatures! We love them madly or we hate them, but one thing is certain: we do not remain indifferent!

Handmade and signed by the artisan Honda Nobuo borned in 1918.
