 ... This large traditionalHijiori kokeshi doll is 31 cm(12,2")

 Hair patina by time.

The Togatta style has been mixed with the Naruko style to give the particular Hijiori style.

Nowadays, this style is the one that gathers the smallest number of craftsmen!

The kokeshi Hijiori have a rather large head and a decoration of red color on the head (tegara or other) and sometimes black hair.

Their bodies are stable and round, and the wood used is quite heavy.

We can distinguish the demarcation of the shoulders. The patterns that can be seen on their bodies are chrysanthemums, a kimono or maple leaves.

Yajiro kokeshi by Etsuko Kamada

This Yajiro kokeshi doll is 19 cm (7,5")

pastel colors ; unusual beacause kokeshi used to be painted with dark colors.

Yajiro kokeshi dolls have the head inserted in the body. They often have a beret with various colors.

They have side fringes and a decoration behind the fringes.

Their body is straight, but some Yajiro dolls have a distinct waist o curvaceous body.

They used to have a wider base which makes her very stable.

Nanbu kokeshi tend to be considered as creative kokeshi. Some artisans paint their kokeshi with designs inspired by Naruko and Togatta styles.

They often have a large head with squared hair. You can see the tegara pattern on the top of the head.

No particular decoration on the body, except chrysanthemums or lines.

They often wear a bang and strands of hair on each side, and a little round nose!

[Rare] Zao-Atsumi kokeshi by Shinya Abe

Rare traditional kokeshi in Zao-Atsumi style.

21 cm(8,3")

Zao Style kokeshi, whose style was visibly initiated by Eijiro Okazaki who studied Togatta style at Aone Onsen, and then moved to Zao Onsen.

These kokeshi have a huge head compared to their body, with red lines on the top of the head that start from the forehead and on the sides behind the locks of hair. We call this pattern: tegara

They have a fringe and thick locks on the sides.

The mouth of the kokeshi Zao is red.

She has the lines at the shoulders. The body has patterns like chrysanthemum, cherry blossoms or peonies

This Tsugaru kokeshi doll is 25 cm (10")

Tsugaru style kokeshi may have a round or long head. They have kappa haistyle. Sometimes they wear a cap or a bun on the top of the head.

Made in one block, the head is not dissociable from their body. The decorations that can be seen on their bodies are peonies, lathe lines, an obi (belt to close the kimono), Camellias, irises.

The body can be either straight or with a wider base.
